Troubleshooting Common Issues with the PT-JOY-G4 Joystick

April 28, 2025

This article covers a common issue users experience with the PT-JOY-G4 joystick and how to resolve it.

The PT-JOY-G4 is the fourth-generation serial/IP controller from PTZOptics. You can find more information about it [ here ] .

Is Your Joystick Set Up Correctly?

Before troubleshooting further, verify that your joystick is properly set up with your PTZOptics cameras.
Refer to [ this article ] for detailed setup instructions.

Have There Been Recent Changes to Your Network?

If you recently changed your router or internet service provider, your cameras may require new IP addresses. The following articles will assist you in diagnosing and resolving IP-related issues:

  • [ This article ] explains how to check if your camera’s IP addresses are correct.

  • [This article] guides you through setting an IP address for PTZOptics third-generation cameras.

  • [ This article ] explains how to set an IP address for PTZOptics second-generation cameras.

Once your cameras have the correct IP addresses for your network, follow [this article] to reconfigure the joystick.

Serial Control: Key Troubleshooting Areas

When using serial control , troubleshooting is typically more straightforward, focusing on four main checks.

If you are unsure how to access the camera's on-screen menu (OSD), refer to [ this article ] for guidance.

1. Protocol: Does the Protocol Match?

PTZOptics cameras and joysticks are set to VISCA by default.

  • You can view the protocol on the joystick screen.

  • On the camera, navigate to Setup > Communication Setup Menu to find and adjust the protocol.

  • Use the joystick or camera controls to scroll left or right to change the protocol if needed.

Note: If you can navigate this menu with the joystick, you likely already have serial control.

2. Camera Address: Are the Addresses Matching?

In serial control, camera addresses (not IP addresses) must match between the joystick and the camera.

  • This setting is found in the Communication Setup Menu .

  • Ensure the Camera Number on the joystick screen matches the address configured in the camera.

3. Baud Rate: Is the Baud Rate Correct?

The baud rate must match between the joystick and the camera.

  • The PTZOptics default baud rate is 9600 .

  • Confirm that the baud rate displayed on the joystick matches the value in the camera’s communication settings.

Tip: As long as both devices match, they can operate at different baud rates than default if necessary.

4. Cabling: Are Your Cables Working Properly?

Cable issues are a common cause of control loss—even new cables can be faulty.

  • If using serial daisy-chaining and control is lost on cameras further down the chain, try connecting the joystick directly to one of the affected cameras using the provided DB9 to Mini-DIN cable.

  • If a specific camera works when plugged directly into the joystick but not in the chain, the issue may be with the cabling between the cameras.

  • As a last resort, replace the cable to rule out damage or defects.

Is Your Joystick in the Correct Control Mode?

The PT-JOY-G4 can only operate in one control mode at a time :

  • Network Mode (IP control)

  • Analog Mode (RS-232, RS-422, RS-485 serial control)

Switching between these modes is done by pressing and holding the button located on top of the joystick handle.

Important: The button placement makes it easy to accidentally switch modes during use, which can cause sudden control loss.

If You Lose Control:

  1. Check the mode at the bottom of the joystick’s screen:

    • Network for IP control

    • Analog for serial control

  2. If the wrong mode is displayed :

    • Press and hold the button on top of the joystick for approximately three seconds .

    • The joystick should switch to the correct mode, allowing you to regain camera control.
