How to Upgrade the Firmware on a PTZOptics Second-Generation Camera

PTZOptics G2 Firmware Upgrade Guide

Note: This guide is for PTZOptics G2 cameras only.
If you are using a Move 4K, Move SE, Link 4K, or Studio Pro camera, please refer to the appropriate guide here .


Important Information About Firmware Compatibility

While updating the firmware for PTZOptics cameras isn't overly complicated, it's important to follow the correct process based on your camera's serial number.

  • Serial Number Format:

    • If your serial number starts with two letters (e.g., FF , FE ), you can continue using [this guide] . (account creation required)

    • If your serial number starts with the model number (e.g., 20XSDIGYG2 , 12XUSBWHG2 ), your camera may be older. Please contact us to confirm the correct firmware.


Step 1: Identify the Required Firmware

  1. Locate your camera's full serial number .

  2. Refer to this [ firmware article] to determine the correct firmware file for your camera.

  3. You will need:

    • The Upgrade tool (V2.8 for Windows or V2.7 for Mac)

    • The firmware file specific to your camera model

Example: A 20X SDI camera would use a specific firmware file based on the serial number.


Step 2: Download and Extract Files

(windows)

  1. Download the required tools and firmware files.

  2. Open your Downloads folder.

  3. Right-click on each ZIP folder and choose “Extract All…” , keeping the default extraction location (Downloads folder).

  4. In the extracted " Windows Upgrade Tools v2.8C " folder, right-click Upgrade.exe and choose “Run as administrator.”

(Mac)

  1. Download the required tools and firmware files.

  2. Look for the " Mac Upgrade Tool v2.7C ".

  3. Go to the download folder and open the DMG file. Then, open the upgrade application. This may be blocked the first time you open the application. If so, follow the steps in [this article] to "open the Mac tool."


Step 3: Launch Upgrade Tool

  1. The Upgrade 2.8 tool will open. (V2.8 for Windows or V2.7 for Mac)

  2. If your camera is already on a valid IP address:

    • Navigate to the Upgrade tab.

    • Enter your camera’s IP address .

    • Change the dropdown in the upper-left corner to “MTD” .

    • Click Query to populate your camera’s current firmware info.

Step 4: Load Firmware File

  1. Click the Open button.

  2. Navigate to the folder where you extracted the firmware (likely in Downloads).

  3. Select the appropriate firmware file. This should be the ".img" file found in the bundle folder.

You should now see the firmware information populated in the tool interface.


Step 5: Begin the Firmware Upgrade

  1. Confirm you’ve selected the correct firmware file.

  2. Click Upgrade .

  3. The status bar will progress as follows:

    • 10% → 47% → 70% → 85%

    • The camera will stay on 85% for a few minutes.

    • The camera will reboot at 85% and proceed to 98%

    • One final reboot will complete the process at 100% with a message: “Upgrade complete”

    • The camera will reboot on its own. DO NOT reboot or unplug it until you get the "Upgrade Complete" message unless told to do so by support.


Step 6: Firmware Upgrade Complete

Your camera is now running the latest firmware version.
